Crude processing monopoly weakens

The country's largest weapons manufacturer was given license to import crude oil, a pivotal move in reforming the oil industry, which is currently monopolized by five State-run companies, the Economic Observer reported Friday.

The China North Industries Group Corporation (CNIGC) has been approved to import crude through its subsidiary China Zhenhua Oil, State-run media said.

"The move will lead to more channels for overseas energy purchases and lower oil prices after more buyers enter the market," said Zhong Jian, analyst with Archlord gold, Shanghai-based Toprise Information & Technology Company.

Crude imports are currently the exclusive domain of five firms - PetroChina, Sinopec , Sinochem, CNOOC and Zhu-hai Zhenrong.

China joined the WTO in December 2001, vowing to break up its State-monopolized oil industry over time. The country opened the oil import business up to Archlord gold more firms in 2002 after the passage of anti-trust legislation, but reforms have been slow going.

In 2007, China issued crude import licenses to 15 private companies, which then accounted for 20 percent of the country's total crude imports. But the government set strict criteria for the new importers restricting their ability to expand.

"In theory, the move benefits a more open world of warcraft gold, and transparent market," said Lin Boqiang, director of the Center for Energy Economic Research of China at Xiamen University, Fujian Province. "But only in theory world of warcraft gold. All the crude imported can only be processed at Sinopec and PetroChina refineries."

The entrance of CNIGC, however, may herald a major break with the monopoly past.

"The oil imported by CNIGC will end up in its own refinery in Liaoning Province and sold in southern China," Zhong said.

This could set the stage for more companies to open refineries and slowly break the oil giants' grip on the industry.

So far, 23 companies have maple story mesos, successfully entered the oil import business, including several private firms.

China, the world's second-biggest energy user following maple story mesos the US, has increased oil import quotas for private companies each year. In 2009, China Zhenhua Oil enjoyed a crude oil quota of about 1.2 million tons.

The company is expected to import 4 to 5 million tons this year, which will be valued as much as 25 billion yuan ($ 3.66 billion).

England disappoint as incredulous fans refuse to lose the faith

What a shock it was for 2moons dil, the traveling England fans on Friday night in Cape Town. In the buildup to the Algeria game they turned the city's popular waterfront area into party central, leading a carnival of singing 2moons dil and dancing that made the match seem like a mere sideshow.

In the stands at the fantastic Green Point Stadium there was an electric atmosphere as the teams came out and fans belted out the national anthem.

Those around me made their feelings clear about what should be done with those irritating and ubiquitous plastic trumpets.

"You can stick your vuvuzelas up your arse," they sang to the tune of "she'll be coming round the mountain."

The mood was optimistic, and replica rolex, no one predicted what was coming next. The vibe changed as it became quickly apparent England were off message. Anger and frustration were followed by resignation, and at final whistle there was a stunned silence before the booing rained down.

Upset England fans shared their opinions as they nursed replica rolex hangovers with bloody marys back at the waterfront on Saturday. Most still believe the team will qualify, which seems unrealistic based on the evidence so far.

"What is maddening is that all of us can see the team selection and formation is wrong, but Fabio Capello is too stubborn to make any changes, or he just doesn't trust some of the players to do what he says," said Andy Bates, a builder from Blackpool.

South Africans are also convinced that England are destined to go through.

There was serious debate in the lobby at the Oria Guest House the morning after the game.

Isaac Oria, the owner, said this is the most unpredictable World Cup he can remember. "England must beat Slovenia - it would be oblivion for them fast wow gold, if they were are eliminated."

Clearly there is something seriously wrong in the England camp, and fast wow gold some of the flippant post-match comments from the players and coach indicate that they have misjudged the fans' mood.

England supporters in full voice are truly a sight to behold and they deserve a performance that reflects their enthusiasm.

Girlfriends ignored in World Cup mania

Many female college students seem to have a love-hate relationship with the ongoing 2010 FIFA World Cup.

They say male classmates are so obsessed with the World Cup that they overlook their girlfriends.

Eager to watch the opening ceremony on June 11, law student Li Ou at Neijiang Normal University in Sichuan Province urged his girlfriend Wang Xue to wow power leveling, hurry up and finish dinner that evening so he could race back to the TV set.

Wang was upset that her boyfriend left wow power leveling with only an apology. When the ceremony was over, Li felt guilty and tried to apologize to her. Wang didn't accept his explanation, shouting, "Do you want to stay with football for the rest of your life!"

Just like Wang, many female students hate the World Cup because their boyfriends are so absorbed in the soccer matches that their girlfriends feel totally ignored.

A college blogger calling aion kinah, herself Zhong Heyong wrote an article on qq.com titled, A letter to the World Cup: No.1 Rival in Love for Female College Students.

The letter expressed the student's jealousy of the World Cup in aion kinah the rivalry for her affection. "Why do you, World Cup, let me witness this intimacy between you and my boyfriend? From high school to the third year in college, he looks forward to you and is prouder of you than me."

She poured out replica rolex, her disappointment with her boyfriend, saying that her heart was broken because after being with him four years, she couldn't compete with a football.

At the end of the letter, the author surrenders to replica rolex the World Cup but still hopes her boyfriend will love her forever.

"I totally lose. I present my boyfriend the World Cup. I hope it will give him amazing memories and hope he will get tired of it after a while. Then he will love me again forever."

To avoid his girl friend when the games are in progress, a freshman at Wenhua College, Huazhong University of Science cheap aion kinah and Technology in Wuhan, Hubei Province set down 10 rules for his girlfriend.

The regulations stipulated the times they could hang out, date, or even pick up the phone when the World Cup is on TV.

One of the regulations cheap aion kinah, said, "Football matches are my life. We can't hang out, have dinner or call each other when I'm watching the World Cup. We must cancel all kinds of entertainment."

The telecommunication freshman, Zhu Xiaofeng, said he wrote the rules for fear of quarreling with his girl friend, Wang Xiaoxiao, when the games are under way.

"So I set the regulations for the purpose of enjoying the World Cup and reminding my girlfriend in advance," Zhu said.

Wang surrendered and agreed to obey the rules.

"The World Cup is once every four years. Compared to the time we are together, it's a small percentage. I should permit several days' leave for my boyfriend to watch the match," she said.

Meanwhile, the World Cup has inspired a new kind of dating game. Some single female students make full use of male fascination with football to hunt for a partner.

Xiao Dou, a female student at maple story mesos, the School of Foreign Language, Neijing Normal University, is a soccer fan. She asked a young man whom she recently met to send her chocolates. She explained that she needed something sweet to eat while watching the matches at night.

As a reward, Xiao Dou maple story mesos invited the young man to watch the World Cup with her.

A short while later, they announced to the world that they were falling in love.

History and sex in the city

Tongli is located on the outskirts of Suzhou, just 40 minutes from downtown, and like Suzhou, it has several lush gardens featuring traditional Chinese architecture and horticulture. Tongli's most prominent garden is the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911AD) Tuisi Garden. In Chinese, the word tuisi means "retreat" and "reflection," so, as expected, the garden boasts a number of pagodas and towers perched above a large goldfish pond, ideal for facilitating contemplation. While the hordes of tourists milling about may detract from this purpose, the views are cabal alz, pleasant, and lingering in the quieter spots still leaves time for thought. In the Gathering Beauty Pavilion, designed for observing the moonlight, one can ponder the meaning of poems written in ancient Chinese about the differing nature of rocks high on the mountainside and those deep under water.

Pearl's a singer

Those tired of seeking inspiration in the nooks of gardens can choose to watch a performance of traditional Wuxi opera staged during weekends and holidays from 10 am to 11:30 am and 3 pm to 4 pm. These shows re-enact various scenes from The Pearl Pagoda, a melodrama once serialized on Chinese television cabal alz and which details the love affair between Fang Qing and Chen Cui'e. So the story goes, Fang wished to marry Chen, but didn't have the money or status required to win her family's approval. In order to improve his chances, Fang hoped to take the imperial examination, but didn't have enough money to travel in order to do so. To help Fang, Chen wrapped a miniature tower made of pearls in a box of sweets for his trip. Today, travelers to Tongli can still see the compound where Chen lived, and the Pearl Pagoda where she allegedly gave Fang the treasure that funded his journey.

Red-hot Chile favorites despite our rout of Spain, says Swiss coach Hitzfeld

Chile will start as favorites against Switzerland in today's World Cup Group H match, Swiss coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said.

The 61-year-old German - one of only three coaches to have won the Champions League with two different clubs - said that despite his side having beaten European champions Spain 1-0 in their opening match they did not merit being favorites.

Hitzfeld based his World of Warcraft power leveling, claim on Chile's opening 1-0 win over Honduras and their qualifying campaign.

"Switzerland are not favorites, it will be Chile," said Hitzfeld, who World of Warcraft power leveling won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

"This team really impressed me, firstly in qua l i f y ing . Not many teams end up finishing above Argentina."

"Against Honduras, the Chileans were unbelievable and they could have 3-0 or 4-0 instead of 1-0. They are a solid unit, with very fast players."

Hitzfeld said he expected last chaos gold, a more complicated match than against the Spanish where a second-half goal by Gelson Fernandes accounted for the tournament favorites last chaos gold.

"It will be above all more difficult on the mental front. It is imperative that we are totally focused."

"In terms of strategy, we will have to be even more compact than we were against Spain."

"The victory against Spain was an extraordinary moment but will be pointless if we fail to reach the second round."

Hitzfeld, whose contract runs till 2012 and has hinted he would not return to club management, said that he had been hugely proud of his aoc power leveling, players, who grabbed the win despite the absence of two of their most influential players in striker Alexander Frei and West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami.

"They were utterly fantastic, surpassing themselves. If we aoc power leveling look at the statistics, they ran a total of 120 kilometers to the 115 covered by the Spaniards," said Hitzfeld. "There has been no sense of euphoria among us. We took three points against Spain."

"It is the type of present that one doesn't expect. Nothing is decided in this group. But we have nevertheless a real chance to finish top of the group, which would give us an extra day's rest before the second round," he said.

Switzerland, twice quarterfinalists, round off their group matches against Honduras in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Rommedahl flies high over lopsided Cameroon

Samuel Eto'o was left speechless on Sunday when Cameroon, arguably one of Africa's strongest sides, became the first team to crash out of the aoc power leveling, group stage in the tournament after 90 minutes of open, exciting and frantic football.

The African lions bounced back from a passionless first match against the Netherlands by opting for a more aggressive 4-3-1-2 formation, with Achilles Emana playing behind Eto'o aoc power leveling and Pierre Webo, while fullback Geremi supported Alexander Song and Eyong Enoh to their right-hand side - but left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto was left alone.

The shape worked well early on as Cameroon totally dominated the central midfield, allowing Eto'o and Webo to continually make good runs behind the Danish backline.

Cameroon were pressing much better than in their first match and Eto'o deservedly gave his team the lead in the 10th minute when he slotted home after Emana intercepted Christian Poulsen's careless pass and squared the ball to the Inter marksman.

Denmark, who lost to the Dutch 2-0 five days earlier, had no choice but to bounce back immediately. Unlike their African counterparts, the Danish side, playing with a 4-2-3-1 formation, chose to exploit both flanks with their lightning-quick wingers. When Jesper Cronkjaer found Final Fantasy XI GIL, himself no space on the overcrowded left side, the natural next step for the Danish players was to switch the ball diagonally to the right, where Dannis Rommedahl was facing the isolated Assou-Ekotto.

And that decision changed the outcome of the match.

The weak point of Cameroon's lopsided shape was all too clear and the quicker Denmark put the ball there. A 60-yard lob from Simon Kjaer found Rommedahl and the Ajax winger then Final Fantasy XI GIL skipped past Assou-Ekotto before setting up Nicklas Bendtner for the equalizing goal midway through the first half.

Denmark punished Cameroon in the same way 15 minutes after the break when Rommedahl found space again in his area. This time he was up against aion kinah, substitute John II Makoun, when Assou-Ekotto was pushing deep to join the attack. The on-form player easily cut inside and curled a superb goal into the far corner.

A passionless first match and a tactical blunder in the second dented Eto'o aion kinah and Cameroon's hope of reaching the last 16. You are never going to progress far if you expose your weakness so clearly to your opponents and they were unable to change after being out-minded for long.

Denmark showed their tactical flexibility in this match, placing veterans Gronkjaer and Jon Dahl Tomasson behind frontline and outplayed opponents on the right flank after conceding an early goal. The Danes are now given another must-win task in their last group game against Japan, who enjoy a goal-difference advantage to stay second in Group E.

Poles vote for new leader

Poland kicked off its general election Sunday as the Central European country remains traumatized by the loss of its former president and high-ranking officials in an April plane crash in western Russia.

Roughly 30 million Poles headed to 25,774 polling stations nationwide that opened at 6 am Warsaw time (0400 GMT) and closed at 8 pm (1800 GMT).

The United States was the earliest among 263 voting areas set up overseas.

The latest opinion poll indicated replica sunglasses, that Bronislaw Komorowski, 58, the acting president and former defense minister, who represents the pro-EU Civic Platform (PO), held a safe lead among replica sunglasses the 10 candidates, with support from 56 percent of those polled.

His archrival, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, 61, the twin brother of the late president Lech Kaczynski and the former prime minister heading the largest opposition Law and Justice Party (PiS), was in second with 33 percent of voters.

Li Jun, an aoc gold, expert on Poland at the Institute of European Studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, was optimistic about the prospects for the PO.

"The PO pursues moderate aoc gold and pragmatic policies, and stresses a balance between the West and Russia. Whereas, the PiS is relatively conservative, it has ties with both the EU and Russia, and lacks grass-root sbacking," Li said Sunday.

The PO trounced the PiS in the 2007 election.

None of the rival parties, mired in power wrangling since 2005, could secure 50 percent of the vote for an outright win, and the two aforementioned groups are expected to vie for power in a July 4 runoff, according to analysts.

"The two major parties represent different interest blocs. The PO primarily fights for the interests of the working class, while the PiS age of conan power leveling, represents middle and upper echelons," He Maochun, director of the Research Center for Economic Diplomacy Studies at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times age of conan power leveling.

Colombians go to the polls

Voters in Colombia went to the polls Sunday to elect a successor to popular conservative President Alvaro Uribe, with his choice, ex-defense minister Juan Manuel Santos, heavily favored to win.

Uribe served two consecutive terms, from 2002. But the constitutional court rejected his bid to seek a third term. That has helped rally his aion gold, sup-porters around Santos, who is representing the conservative Social National Unity party.

The conservative, a staunch US ally, leaves power with an approval rating of more than 70 percent, largely on aion gold the back of his tough "democratic security" policies that have aggressively taken on the leftist insurgencies that have destabilized the country for more than four decades.

At 57, Uribe remains hugely popular among Colombians, whom he has urged to "keep (Colombia) on course" by keeping in place "democratic security" measures while encouraging foreign investment.

Thus, Santos' goal has been made very clear: In his own words, "to keep in place the legacy of Uribe, the best president Colombia has had."

Santos heads into maple story mesos, a runoff with a broad lead after winning the first-round May 30 poll with 46.6 percent of the votes, against 21.5 percent for his rival, former Bogota maple story mesos mayor Antanas Mockus, 58, of the Green Party.

And on the route to the runoff, Santos has locked up the support of the Conservative Party and right-wing Radical Change, both part of Uribe's ruling coalition.

Polls forecast he will draw more than 60 percent of the votes, compared with about 28 percent for Mockus.

China raises emergency response level for floods

China's disaster relief departments raised the emergency response to level-three from level-four Saturday morning for the floods that have hit southern China, as authorities forecast more rain to fall over coming days.

The Civil Affairs Ministry dog clothes, and the State Disaster Relief Commission made the decision.

As of 10:00 a.m. Saturday, downpours that began pounding southern China Sunday had left 88 people dead, 48 missing, and forced the evacuation of 757,000 residents from their homes, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said dog clothes in a statement.

About 9.27 million people in Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Guizhou and Sichuan were affected by the heavy rains, the ministry said.

Direct economic losses caused by the heavy rains have topped 10 billion yuan (about 1.46 billion US dollars).

The State Council has dispatched work teams to the floods-affected areas in Fujian to guide the disaster relief work. The team is being led by Vice Civil Affairs Minister Sun Shaocheng and consists of officials from seven ministries.

Also on Saturday, the National Meteorological Center reiterated the rainstorm orange alert - the second-highest level - it issued Friday, warning that more rains and very possibly heavy rainstorms are likely to hit southern China over coming days.

Valuable calligraphy works 'lost' by officials

A Chinese man who donated valuable calligraphy works to the public in northwest Shannxi Province in the 1980s has alleged that authorities now illegally possess the works that he estimates are worth some 40 million yuan ($5.8 million).

Zhuo Deng, 62, handed a total of 122 pieces of a renowned calligrapher's works to the local committee of the country's political advisory body in dog clothes, Xianyang city in 1986, in the belief that they would be assured better preservation.

Zhuo inherited the works from his father, who served as dog clothes chief security guard of Yu Youren, a renowned calligraphist and writer, and who left the 122 calligraphy works to Zhuo's father before moving to Taiwan in 1945.

In a seperate case, in an auction held in Beijing by the China Guardian Auction Corporation last month, another 138 items of Yu's calligraphy works were sold for around 45 million yuan, a reminder for Zhuo of how valuable the works are.

"I estimated my donation would be worth some 40 million yuan," Zhuo told the Global Times Sunday.

"Many of Yu's cheap aion kinah, items were damaged during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), and the 122 pieces he donated include a well-known 'thousand-word calligraphy work,' and which were saved because they were well kept in cheap aion kinah a secret cabinet in my mother's home," Zhuo said.

Despite a certificate of donation with details of each of the calligraphy works he donated, Zhuo claims that the whereabouts of the items were not clear, as he was informed that the authorities had taken the works away.

A former staff member of the Xianyang committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), speaking on con-dition of anonymity, told the Global Times Sunday that she could confirm Zhuo's donation.

She said the items had replica rolex, been brought to Shenzhen in southern China for public exhibition.

She was told the calligraphy works replica rolex were kept at a cultural center in Sanyuan county, administered by Xianyang city.

Lu Hua, 77, former secretary-general of the Xianyang committee of the CPPCC, also witnessed the donation, according to the Beijing News.

Lu told the paper replica rolex, that some of the works were taken home by staff members and that some suggested he also take some of the items home, but he refused to.

Lu retired in 1992 and had no idea of the relics' whereabouts, and he heard there were replica rolex only about 10 pieces left in the possession of the Xianyang Committee.

Jin Zhizhong, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of Collectors, told the Global Times that there are no specific laws or rules governing the donation of cultural relics by individuals.

"The most important thing is to identify the source of the donations in order to determine whether they are obtained legally," he said.

If the items were not flyff penya, unearthed by the donator himself and came from where he claimed them to have come from, then these donations are legal and valid, he said.

The Xianyang committee promised to flyff penya return 10 calligraphy scripts to Zhuo - but so far, Zhuo said, he hasn't received any.
Three stuns on one day at 2010 World Cup

Unexpected results were witnessed in all the three World Cup group matches held in South Africa on Friday when Serbia stunned

Germany 1-0, Slovenia tied the United States 2-2 and England drew Algeria 0-0.

In Port Elizabeth, Serbia upset three-time world champions Germany 1-0 in Group D with the most yellow cards of nine since the

opening of the tournament.

Serbia thus broke a archlord money, streak of five World Cup defeats in a row and joined

Germany and Ghana on three points on the billboard.

This was also Germany's first World Cup loss in the group stage since 1986 edition, when they lost to Denmark.

Germany opened up archlord money their campaign with a 4-0 rout of Australia thanks to goals from Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose,

Thomas Muller and Cacau, while Serbia suffered a 1-0 defeat by Ghana.

In the 36th minute, Klose received his second yellow card and was sent off. Serbia cashed in on the opportunity with Milan Jovanovic

slotting home dog clothes, a goal two minutes later to make Serbia the 1-0 win.

Serbia's goalie Stojkovic, the Man of the Match, said they deserved the victory. "This is a great victory for all of us, we showed

that we are a great team."

Serbia will next meet Australia dog clothes, while Germany will take on Ghana in the last group matches.

In Johannesburg, the United States dashed Slovenia's hope to become the first to sail into the knockout stage by rallying from two

goals down to tie their Group C match 2-2.

Slovenia would have maple story mesos, sealed a berth among the top 16 if it could

beat the Stars and Stripes, after the European squad defeated Algeria 1-0 and the United States held England to 1-1 earlier in Group

C.

Speed became the key word of the match between the maple story mesos world's sports heavyweight and the European nation with the

smallest territory among the 32 finalists qualified for the World Cup finals.

The Slovenian squad broke the deadlock in the 13th minute. Valter Birsa curled a left-foot shot into the corner of net 30 meters

from the goal.

Under flyff penya, the waves of the rush to goal, Slovenian forward Zlatan

Ljubijankic exchanged passes with his teammates and made a breakthrough into the loose American defense in the 42nd minute.

After the interval, Landon Donovan organized a sole charge from flyff penya the right wing in the 48th minute. The equalizer made some

U.S. fans burst into tears.

Slovenia will face England for their last group match while the United States will meet Algeria.

In Cape Town last chaos gold, England, one of the FIFA World Cup hot favorites, were

held a goalless draw with Algeria in Group C last chaos gold, standing third after the two group matches.

England coach Fabio Capello said after the game that the Algerians defended well and "we made many mistakes under high pressure".

This was one of the most lackluster matches of the ongoing World Cup. Both sides failed to create clear scoring chances.

Completely outfought and constantly outnumbered in the middle of the field, England always seemed hurried and never had the

opportunity to build their self-confidence. As the game went on, their passing grew steadily worse and worse.

Despite having suffered similar problems using a 4-4-2 against a 4-5-1 in the first half of the warm-up match against Japan, it was

surprising to World of Warcraft power leveling, see Capello so

reluctant to bring on someone like Joe Cole or even Michael Carrick to help assert some control.

Algerian coach Sabah Saadane said that "we could have won as we had scoring chances."

Commenting on England, he said that "I don't know what happened to them. I expected them to play better."

From the off, the Algerians looked more composed World of Warcraft power leveling in possession and comfortable with their game

plan, restricting the space for England in midfield by playing a 4-5-1 formation and breaking at pace. While they never looked

likely to win it, they will feel they have carried out their plans to perfection and were the better team on the night.

So far in Group C, Slovenia are at the top with one win and a tie, followed by the United States with two ties, England also two

ties but less goals, and Algeria one tie and one loss.

Australia are last with one.

Ghana's first effort in Royal Bafokeng Stadium came in World of Warcraft power leveling the sixth minute as Kevin-Prince Boateng denied Jason Culina's possession 35 meters from goal and blasted well wide of the left hand post.

It was Australia who opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Carl Valeri earned a free kick 30 meters from goal and Marco Bresciano curled the ball over cheap wow gold, the wall and, when Ghana keeper Richard Kingson spilled the ball, Hulman tapped home from close range.

The situation changed at the 24th minute when a Ghana cross from the right found Jonathan Mensah and his goalbound shot hit striker Harry Kewell on the line.
Brazil becomes 2nd squad of top 16, slashing Cote d'Ivoire 3-1

Five-time World Cup winners Brazil secured a berth in the knockout stage of World Cup by slashing Cote d'Ivoire 3-1 in the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday.

It was the second match of the Selecao in Group G after they defeated the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) 2-1 on June 15 when Cote d'Ivoire drew Portugal 0-0 in their first group match in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Both squads had replica rolex, prudent organization since the beginning, especially the Elephants which had replica rolex sought counter-attack chances while taking tight defense line-up as many analysts forecast ahead of the duel.

Failing the expectation of coach Sven Goran Eriksson, Cote d'Ivoire did not show consistent performance as time went by. The porous defense made the Elephants pay a high cost.

Brazilian core midfielder Kaka broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. He grasped a fault of Cote d'Ivoire defenders in passing and fed the ball into the path of talented forward Luis Fabiano. The latter fired it into the roof of the net with a powerful thrust, putting the South Americans in the leading position.

Kaka's display in Eve isk, assisting attacks of teammates proved his prominence in the pitch. His sluggish performance in the prior match against the DPRK has been heavily criticized by football fans.

Fabiano shone again five minutes after the interval. He flicked over one defender's challenge Eve isk and slammed home into the corner of the net with his left foot.

The goal has aroused controversy among fans as it had a hint of handball. But referee Stephane Lannoy did not sign a judgment.

Brazil's midfielder Elano who played for Turkey's Galatasaray extended their lead in the 62nd minute with a close-range shot.

The Elephants strived to ffxi gil, score once in the 79th minute when substitute forward Gervinho's run enabled the ball fall to Barcelona's renowned midfielder Yaya Toure. Captain Didier Drogba headed the ball and made it bounce into the upper corner of the net.

The fierce clash of the two squads led to chaos when ffxi gil the match entered the last 10 minutes. Kaka received his second yellow card after he seemed to elbow Cote d'Ivoire substitute Kader Keita following a collision. The Real Madrid man was off the pitch.

The two sides have never drawn swords at senior level. The only prior encounter between Brazil and Cote d'Ivoire took place in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. They shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the 1977 edition in Tunisia.

With the victory, Brazil continued its wow power leveling, glittering tradition of winning on South African soil: apart from their win against DPRK, five in the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and two friendlies against wow power leveling the home team in 1996 and 1997.

Holders Italy to take on New Zealand in Group F

Reigning world champions Italy will take on New Zealand who ranked 74 places below here on Sunday, hoping for their first win in the World Cup Group F.

However, soccer matches are not decided on paper, and New Zealand go into this match level on points and goal difference with the mighty Azzurri. The odds will be slim on them, but this All Whites side are pressure-free.

Slow starters at major competitions, Italy fought one goal down for a 1-1 draw with Paraguay in their opener without Gianluigi Buffon, who will still be at the sideline against the Kiwis due to back injury.

With an identical result in the group's other match, nothing less than a win will satisfy an expectant Italian public.

However, Marcello Lippi knows replica rolex, that New Zealand will be no pushovers. Not many teams scored three goals past the Italians, but Ricki Herbert's All Whites managed when they met in a June 2009 friendly here in South Africa. Lippi's side eventually triumphed 4-3.

But New Zealand are on a high note after replica rolex winning their first-ever FIFA World Cup point in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Slovakia.

Chris Killen is not one of the star strikers, indeed, he is set to find himself without a club when his Middlesbrough contract expires later this month. However, the big Kiwi did cause major problems for Italy the last time they met with his strength and aerial ability, and even grabbed a brace of goals.

The man to stop Killen repeating the feat is Federico Marchetti. The Cagliari No1 performed assuredly against Paraguay and will be aiming to make it as difficult as possible for Lippi to leave him out once Buffon returns.

Italy are the only team in South Africa without a win in 2010. Their last victory came with a 1-0 friendly triumph over Sweden on November 18, 2009, with the time since yielding three draws and a defeat.

"(New Zealand) are wow power leveling very physical. We played them in a friendly last year, they're very dangerous in the air and from set pieces. But everyone knows that we should win. We have to give away as little as possible and to keep the ball on the ground rather than playing long balls. I don't even want to think about the possibility of a draw or something else," said Italian midfielder Giorgio Chiellini.

"(Beating Italy) would just totally change the landscape of the nation. And that's what we're trying to do, we're trying to be the front-runners to show that football is wow power leveling, the biggest sport on the planet," New Zealand forward said Rory Fallon.

It took New Zealand over 40 years of winning their first FIFA World Cup point.
The push for private labor unions raises questions

Zhao Lianguo threw a cigarette to each of his nine laborers and said it was time for a 10-minute break.

Next week, after they move about 20 trees from a long narrow plot of land bordering a construction site to the neighboring backyard of a row of residential buildings, Zhao and his squad of migrant workers will leave Beijing for home to harvest their wheat crops.

Sitting and squatting beneath Archlord gold, the dense shade of a willow, the men fired up their cigarettes. No one talked, however. They were worried about their delayed pay before buying train tickets for home.

"My wife called and told me that the wheat has to Archlord gold be harvested in seven days, but we still don't have our pay for April," said Zhao, 46, who is from Shangqin village, Zhenyuan county, Gansu Province.

Previously, the company routinely held their salaries in arrears for one month. But recently the delays have lasted for two months, said the men.

Pushing for private unions

"Newspapers said that the government is world of warcraft gold, encouraging rural migrant workers to set up their own labor unions to fight for their own interests. Is this something we can try?" Zhao asked his men.

What Zhao and his men were talking about was an urgent circular issued last Friday by the All China Federation of Trade Unions. It said all trade unions under governments at different levels must spare world of warcraft gold no effort in instituting labor unions in private companies. The trade unions are expected to enroll all employees, including rural migrant workers.

"Trade unions must push for a collective bargaining … to establish a mechanism for fixing a reasonable level of employees' pay, ensuring the normal pay-out of workers' salaries and realizing an anticipatable growth of pay to workers, especially to those working at the forefronts (in companies and factories)," the circular said.

"It seems that the government is maple story mesos, on our side this time, and so it's worth a try," said Zhao.

The circular is the latest step of a spate of talks maple story mesos and moves by the central and local governments over the past two months aimed at increasing incomes and welfare of manufacturing workers and other low-income groups.

The final result would be an overall increase in the labor costs, which analysts said might mean the nation is giving up, voluntarily or not, one of its most powerful competitive edges in the world economy and shifting toward an efficiency-based growth mode. But China may not be fully prepared for the possible pitfalls.

Surging exports and huge government-induced investments, plus a seemingly endless supply of cheap labor and slack environment protection have been China's formula for its glittering 9.7 percent annual economic growth over the past 30 years.

But the global financial crisis in late 2008 suddenly changed the whole story.

Looming inflation and 2moons dil, dwindling exports forced China to turn to its countrymen for more consumer power. But many people either found their wallets emptied by rocketing housing prices 2moons dil or just tightened their purse strings for future expenditures on their children's education, family medical care and pension plans.

When the central government hoped to squeeze further growth spurts from exports by holding its currency from appreciating too fast and offering more subsidies to the exporters, it also found that the country's cheap labor - its trump card - had become not as cheap as before.

Economists said China has arrived at its "Lewis turning point," a period in development when an economy shifts from a labor surplus to a labor shortage and wages start to rise faster, and now it will have to turn to increased efficiency and productivity for further growth.

"We are now paid 50 yuan ($7) a day, but we think 60 yuan ($8.80) is a fair level for us," Zhao told his men. "An ordinary brick-layer at my hometown can already earn 60 yuan for a day's work."

In 2004, when he first came to wedding dresses, Beijing for some odd jobs, Zhao said he could only expect 25 yuan ($3.65) a day.

"The (Lewis) turning point is coming. And the increasing labor wedding dresses shortage and the rising workers' pay will eventually push China to recast its industrial structure," said Cai Fang, head of the Institute of Population and Labor Economics with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Beijing responding

Cai said the size of China's labor supply will peak at 2015 and after that, China's labor force between the ages of 16 to 64 will start to decline.

The central government is hearing the alarm and promising to raise workers' incomes, which usually make up less than 10 percent of a typical Chinese firm's operating cost, compared with about 50 per-cent in developed countries.

"Workers' incomes have been held at a relatively small portion of the (wealth) distribution and have resulted in an overly wide income difference among social groups … which, if allowed to continue, will become a grave problem endangering the economic growth and social stability," said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in his signed fast wow gold, article carried in Qiushi, or Seeking Truth, the flagship magazine of China's Communist Party.

The rare success last week of 1,900 workers at fast wow gold a Honda Motor Co plant in Guangdong Province who struck for two weeks and won a 35 percent pay raise last Friday is a telling event signaling the central government has changed its stance on the issue of workers' welfares, analysts said.

"We might not be able to say that the government is orchestrating or aiding the workers' action, but Beijing has at least actively responded to the workers' demand in the course of the events," said Guotai Junan Securities economist Wang Hu.

Over the past three decades, extremely few, if any, Chinese workers have succeeded in their confrontations with management because the central and local governments were eager to woo foreign investment.

The All China Federation of Trade Unions' circular was issued right after the Honda labor settlement. It also highlighted the necessity of organizing labor unions in foreign-funded enterprises and those funded by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan investors.

The timing also sent out a positive message to laborers across China. "If they can make it, why can't we?" Zhao's men asked in chorus.

Analysts have also warned that the shift to efficiency-based economic growth by boosting labor costs and pressing companies to extend their profit margins with more technical innovations may be wishful thinking, or taking the country into unmarked waters.

"The history of world trade unions show that for the initial period of loosening control of laborers' incomes and benefits, there will also most probably be an eruption of strikes and other serious labor-management conflicts," said Li Lilin, a labor issue expert with Renmin University of China.

Rising labor costs will also likely boost, for a short time, inflation and increase the jobless rate, although China might not lose its current status as a world manufacturing hub because of its huge manufacturing capacity, excellent logistics system and complete industrial chains, said Wang at Guotai Junan.

The grimmest challenge is whether the workers fight for their benefits can be put under control without spilling over to spark social turmoil.

"Beijing needs to reshape the government-backed trade unions so that they can really represent workers interests," said Li.

This is also what Zhao and his men are mulling over.

"Can the government trade unions be trusted if we have to ask them to get our overdue pay for us?" asked Zhao.

Digital innovation chained down by outdated laws

Chinese software is a booming industry, but foreign companies often accuse domestic programs of blatantly stealing code, sometimes to such an extent that when the program runs into a problem, it sends a report to the original US manufacturer rather than the Chinese imitator. Software piracy continues to be common even in major offices. But are piracy laws really fair? Do they hold back domestic development? The Qiangguo Forum of people.com.cn (PO) interviewed Duan Yongzhao(Duan), a strategic consultant at Ziff Davis China, a digital media company specializing in the technology market, on the piracy issues.

PO: Recently, the wow power leveling, Washington-based Business Software Alliance (BSA) released a report saying that the rate of software piracy in China was still as high as 80 percent. Not long after, Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, said that China was "a less interesting market to Microsoft" because of the country's lack of a handle on software piracy. How do you make of it?

Duan: My first response to the news was wow power leveling surprise. As for BSA's report, some Chinese copyright research units have previously exposed that BSA's statistical methods, calculation methods, and use of statistical resources all lack credibility.

And BSA is backed by a set of commercial interest groups. Thus the authenticity of BSA's report is doubtful. People should comprehend all these factors before they make a judgement.

Ballmer's statement closely followed BSA's report. There seems to be nothing to be said against Microsoft's anti-piracy statement since, using software without authorization is certainly illegal and deserves to be penalized.

However, software is aion kinah, an important part of the campaign for the protection of intellectual property, and why has Microsoft jumped out to call for fighting against piracy again recently? We should think carefully about it, as aion kinah he made the statement just one day after the releasing of the news that Apple had passed Microsoft in market capitalization for the first time. I do not think it's a coincidence.

PO: What do you think about software piracy?

Duan: There is a kind of preconception wedding dresses, when people say "piracy." When people say the word, they attach a label of "illegal" to it. However, in fact, it's important to view the phenomenon of piracy with some knowledge of the evolution of intellectual property rights.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) stems from wedding dresses the Berne Convention, which was signed about 120 years ago.

There was no software 120 years ago, and even in 1967, when the WIPO was established, there were many problems that remained to be settled when people put software into the framework of the Berne Convention. Some problems still exist today.

At the first instance, the Berne Convention was signed to protect works of literature and art. Adding software to the convention suggests that it is considered as the equal of literature and art. This brings problems.

For example, the time limit of the protection of software intellectual property is 50 years, the same as that of literary works. It was just established for convenience, since people did not have a very good understanding of software in the 1960s.

But today, the time limit seems to be ridiculous. No software survives longer than 50 years. Even the first software, sold commercially in 1964, is still under protection now.

It's necessary to think about cheap aion kinah, the changes in the concept of intellectual property. It changes with different industries. And we should think about whether the legal framework set 120 years ago still fits today's world.

As there are still many continuing problems, I think it's inappropriate to unfurl the banner of anti-software piracy and blindly accuse any digital piracy of being wrong. It may do harm to the innovation cheap aion kinah and development of some IT companies.

The software industry, as well as the Internet industry, is still in its infancy. It needs a stress-free environment which can provide people numerous incentives to create new ideas. Just waving the big stick of anti-piracy for simple commercial interests is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

PO: In face of the powerful overseas software providers and the unsatisfactory environment of the protection of intellectual property, how can Chinese domestic software providers further develop?

Duan: The market share of maple story mesos, domestic software in China has increased significantly in recent years. And in some fields, domestic software even has a dominant position.

For example, in China, overseas software has withdrawn from the market of account management systems as domestic software has achieved significant penetration maple story mesos in the market.

But from the perspective of the whole industry chain, the market share and product spectrum still have large space for development.

On the one hand, Chinese software companies should put emphasis on some basic projects, like important basic software, application software and large-scale software development.

On the other hand, and maybe more importantly, Chinese software companies should learn more about playing in the market at the level of International commercial rules.

Other than marketing, there are cabal alz, other means to win customers. It's more important to guide users' and customers' behaviors, and it is highly possible to shape their behaviors and habits.

Chinese domestic software companies should abandon their cabal alz traditional preference for "the biggest block-buster" software. They should pay more attention to "the long tail," value-added services and customized service. Every penny counts.

Furthermore, it's also important to enhance people's confidence in domestic companies, and these companies should have more self-confidence as well. The domestic software industry needs some policies to encourage it.

For example, government agencies serve as a very big market for the IT industry, and the government could insist on the use of domestic software when it invests in public services, such as the information technology used in medical services, education and public transportation.

PO: Information technology advances very quickly. Can Chinese software keep up, or even be ahead of the pack?

Duan: It's certainly possible, and Chinese companies must do this.

China's information industry has developed for 30 years, and the companies, practitioners, customers and workers have been growing more mature.

Chinese people no longer blindly worship the most advanced technologies, but become more pragmatic. This is a psychological basis for a better Chinese IT industry. And there is a material basis. The network infrastructure and basic services are improving.

There are three areas where the Chinese IT industry can do well in the future. It can acquire a wider vision in the fields of industry planning and policymaking. It should also work on en-couraging some other sectors, like the above mentioned government agencies, to support domestic IT applications. Finally cooperation among different IT and software companies is essential.

Meeting the Taliban in Ghazni

On June 1, Global Times' reporters Hao Zhou and Qiu Yongzheng had an opportunity to talk face to face with a Taliban commander, Gulab Shah, from Afghanistan's Ghazni Province, at World of Warcraft power leveling, midnight in the outskirts of Kabul. Topics included how the Taliban fighters organize, how they survive confrontations with World of Warcraft power leveling NATO-allied troops equipped with much more sophisticated and advanced weapons, and what drives those once-called "freedom fighters" to keep fighting.

"About one week ago, we, in several small groups, ambushed a coalition forces' logistics convoy, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). After we destroyed three tankers, their last chaos gold, helicopters came for help, and we just fled on motorcycles," recalled Gulab Shah, a Taliban commander in the Gilan district of Ghazni Province last chaos gold, south of Kabul.

In the hour of fierce fighting, Gulab lost four soldiers, killing none of the coalition forces, but he insisted the raid was successful. "The only weapon we have in our hands is the Kalashnikov (rifle). We don't possess heavily armored vehicles or helicopters as our enemy does," Gulab said solemnly, with an unchallengeable pride.

Gulab's faithful followers are aoc power leveling, usually grouped in teams of 15 gunmen, with a senior commander in each group. The 36-year-old Pashto man is in charge of seven such operative groups in Gilan.

"Sometimes, when the enemy appears much stronger than us, we bury our weapons and engage in farming with our villagers, who have the same long beard and aoc power leveling dress style as us," Gulab said with a furtive smile as he discussed his fighters' guerilla-war tactics. "And sometimes, we run away and hide in the mountains. My people can aoc power leveling, survive for one month without a food supply there, but our enemies can't."

The Taliban in Ghazni Province, however, is not cohesively organized. Gulab said his aoc power leveling communication was rare with other insurgent groups in the province.

"We aren't paid salaries, but we can get free weapons and ammunitions from our higher commanders. My boys all volunteer to join us to fight for their Islamic beliefs," Gulab said without elaborating on how they acquire free weapons or on who supplies them. But he revealed that they also fight side by side with their Arab brothers.

Once a senior commander is killed or arrested, the Taliban soon picks a new one from the experienced fighters to fill the vacuum. The replacements become more frequent when the Taliban Final Fantasy XI GIL, suffers more casualties, but he said the Taliban never turns into a state of disunity.

The overall Taliban commander in Ghazni Province was Final Fantasy XI GIL Haji Najibullah at the time of the interview with Gulab, who was an intelligence officer in the defense ministry when the Taliban was in power from 1996 to 2001.

Local support

Labeling ordinary Pashto people as Al Qaeda and Taliban is common when a man faces police or troops on the roads, according to a newly published book, Decoding the New Taliban.

Haji Abdul Karim, a garment shop owner in Ghazni city, had an "unpleasant" argument with an intelligence officer. "When we failed to agree on the price of a cloth that he asked for, he started to tell me bad things," Karim recalled. "I replied humbly that it was up to him if he wanted to buy or not. But he immediately accused me of being with the Taliban."

Karim said he was arrested and beaten while in detention until he promised to pay the officer 7,000 afghanis ($140).

Fear of being called a spy, and the Taliban's resistance of foreign troops, have contributed to growing public support of the Taliban in Ghazni, where people are poorer than those in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar and Helmand provinces because of less poppy cultivation.

"In my district, all the people go to aion kinah, the Taliban government to file their complaints and settle their land disputes. We are much more efficient than Karzai's corrupt and ill-performing government, which is aion kinah composed mostly of former Mujahideen factions," Gulab said.

The Taliban has established 31 shadow governments throughout the 34 provinces in Afghanistan, with provincial and military leadership appointed to give effective governance. In January 2009, it claimed to be in control of more than 70 percent of Afghanistan's rural areas.

While setting up its own mobile courts everywhere to solve people's legal disputes, the Taliban has also banned people from resorting to the local government courts, which it claims are corrupt and incompetent.

Like the jirga, or a traditional gathering of Pashto elders to talk about peace, Karzai's government invites only prominent people, who support the government, to attend the meetings, Gulab complained. "There is no opposition voice. Is it justice? Is it democracy?"

"We are virtually in control of all rural areas in Ghazni, apart from highways and district centers," Gulab said. "Our soldiers patrol the area and even fight against mafia and gangs to keep our people safe."

In a rallying cry to gain support, a mullah stood up at the central mosque of Ghazni, proclaiming, "Our beloved Kabul has become a stronghold of immorality and a piece of Europe. It has never happened in Afghanistan's history, even in the era of King Zahir Shah, when girls were wearing mini-skirts.

"If we don't rise up against them, such immorality can reach our home soon."

The mullah concluded by calling his people to join the jihad.

Novartis lawsuit ends abruptly

A lawsuit against Swiss drug giant Novartis AG (Beijing), which was accused of covering up possible adverse reactions that are said to have caused the death of a Chinese consumer, ended abruptly over the weekend following a secret deal reached between the company and the victim's family.

Cheng Lin, a lawyer acting as replica sunglasses, the case's agent, told the Global Times Monday that "both the victim's family and the company have agreed to end the lawsuit under an agreement signed Saturday."

Li Lili, a Hepatitis B sufferer from East China's replica sunglasses Anhui Province, died at the age of 19 in December 2008, 11 months after taking telbivudine tablets, a Hepatitis B drug produced by Novartis, the Guangdong-based Time Weekly newspaper reported last month.

He was diagnosed with Hepatitis aoc gold, B in 2006 and received treatment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University.

Li was found dead as a result of aoc gold multiple organ failure stemming from syndromes due to rhabdomyolysis, or the traumatic compression of muscles, an adverse effect that was not listed in the drug's description until January 4, 2009, almost a week after Li's death, Time Weekly reported.

According to a death report released by the Judicial Appraisal Institute for Science and Technology in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province, the hospital was blamed for age of conan power leveling, medical malpractice, which partly contributed to Li's death.

However, Li's family believes age of conan power leveling that Novartis failed to list possible adverse reactions in the telbivudine specifications, so the family filed a lawsuit against the well-known healthcare products company with the Changping People's Court in Beijing earlier this year.

"Li's death has aion gold, no direct relationship with our medicine; it was directly caused by doctors' irrational use of the drug," Song Xinrong, senior communications manager aion gold of Novartis, told the Global Times Monday.

"Telbivudine tablets are prescription medicine and should be taken according to doctors' instructions," she said.

The medicine was approved in 2006 by the US Food and Drug Administration, which asked the company to use the highest-level warning sign to signal its severe adverse reactions maple story mesos. The drug hit the Chinese market on February 14, 2007, after receiving approval within four months by the SFDA.

In an a interview with the 21st Century Business Herald Newspaper last month, Cheng said the Center for Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring in Zhejiang Province had already reported maple story mesos two deaths after taking the Hepatitis B drug to the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) in 2008.

Though denying that the drug's adverse reactions lead to Li's death, the company conceded that it received the first case report of rhabdomyolysis caused by the drug's adverse reaction in October 2008. The company applied to update its specification after that and got approval from the SFDA on Janaury 4, 2009, 20 days before the US FDA approval.

Song said Novartis had settled the dispute with Li's family, without giving further details.

Cheng, the lawyer for Li's family, also refused to disclose the details of the agreement, such as any amount of compensation for Li's death, because "Li's family and I are not allowed to speak to the media on the case anymore according to the deal."

Cheng's remarks were a swift turn from his former statements. In the interview with the 21st Century Business Herald, Cheng said his clients would sue the company again after dog clothes, July 1 when China's Tort Liability Law wouldbe put into practice, but now that won't happen.

Novartis, which had invested 4 billion yuan in China as dog clothes of last year, sees China as a significant base for growth. There are about 130 million Hepatitis B carriers in China, state media reported, and the number of those suffering from chronic Hepatitis B is close to 90 million.

Global brands face crisis

The case involving Novartis is the latest to hit a top-500 global company. A wave of product-security problems in connection with some of those companies doing business in China, including Procter & Gamble, Toyota and Johnson & Johnson, has put their reputations in jeopardy.

A unit of Johnson & Johnson announced a voluntary recall of 43 over-the-counter children's and infants' medicines after FDA inspectors identified "manufacturing deficiencies" in the company's Fort Washington, Pa., plant.

Despite the fact that J&J insisted that it would not recall products from the Chinese market, the safety concerns have raised fears in China.

The China Business Times commented in an opinion released in May that multinational companies took a double-standard on the Chinese market when dealing with product-security issues, which has posed grave damages to the right to know and the right of choice of Chinese consumers.

Major cities crack down on sex trade

Following the high-profile shutdown of an infamous nightclub in Beijing last month, police in major cities across China launched a new round of crackdowns on entertainment venues connected with the sex industry over the weekend.

In a surprise move, police in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, closed three luxurious nightclubs in the city Sunday morning, the Nanjing-based Modern Express reported Monday.

In what the local police called dog clothes, part of a "security campaign" in the summer, eleven people were detained and 18 others received punishment after a four-hour surprise raid Saturday night of venues suspected of providing sex services.

Mingshang Baolijin Nightclub dog clothes, the so-called safest entertainment venue in Nanjing, was among those raided by the police. More than a hundred people were taken away from the nightclub for questioning.

At the gate of Mingshang, the most luxurious nightclub in the city, a three-meter-high billboard advertises the recruit-ment of xiaojie (mistresses) year-round. According to residents living close to the nightclub, the owner of the nightclub is a businessman from Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.

A patron who declined to be cheap aion kinah, named told the newspaper that all the xiaojie were classified as "princesses" and "beauties." No matter what they were branded, all of them were cheap aion kinah taken to private rooms for clients to choose from.

The "princesses" would be paid at least 200 yuan ($29) for their escort services and the "beauties" at least 300 yuan.

"Princesses" are normally attendants directly managed by nightclubs who are responsible for serving liquor, ordering music and meals for clients. "Beauties" escort clients to drink and dance and some provide sexual services, the patron said.

Clients would be charged 800 yuan for taking a xiaojie home and between 1,000 and 1,500 yuan to stay overnight with a xiaojie at the club.

According to the patron wedding dresses, there are a total of 52 private rooms and 100 xiaojie work at the nightclub.

Meanwhile, at 3 am on Sunday, police in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province wedding dresses, stormed Gege KTV, a prominent nightclub in the city. A total of 600 people were taken away. After a preliminary investigation, five people were detained on suspicion of drug-related activities.

According to local laws wedding dresses, entertainment venues in Guangzhou cannot remain open after 2 am. However, the club was still open at around 3 am Sunday. The club was wedding dresses closed down immediately after the raid.

The crackdown on nightclubs in the two cities provoked memories of a shutdown of a prominent nightclub in Beijing last month. Passion Club, also known as Tianshang Renjian ("paradise"), has been shut down for six months, the maximum penalty for entertainment venues that provide escort services, according to local police.

The crackdown came as Beijing's new police chief, Fu Zhenghua, vowed to clean up the sex industry in the city. Since last month, Beijing police have raided thousands of entertainment venues, closed down 35 venues and detained 1,132 people, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Following Beijing's campaign flyff penya, Carnival, Nanjing's largest nightclub, closed its doors. Despite a manager at the club saying the club had closed for renovation work, speculation has mounted that the closedown is flyff penya related to Beijing's recent crackdown.

The government has also stepped up efforts since January to crack down on online pornography. As part of the anti- pornography campaign, authorities had shut down 1,250 websites and deleted more than 3.2 million items of online information alleged to contain porn and vulgar content by the end of last year.

However, a host of pornographic websites were reportedly freely accessible in China recently. The sudden availability of online porn raises speculation that, with the recent spate of extreme violence carried out by middle-aged men at kindergartens and schools, the government might be allowing pornography as a pressure-release valve.

Rejecting that theory as ridiculous, Li Jiaming, director of the China Illegal Information Reporting Center, told the Global Times, "The authorities remain determined to maple story mesos, erase Internet pornography, and the policy of the clampdown on illegal Internet content is maple story mesos consistent with the govt's policy."

Controlling the industry

The extensive crackdown on nightclubs recently and the ongoing strict monitoring of online pornography renewed discussion about how the sex industry, the so-called world's oldest profession, is managed in China, a society that has experienced dramatic social changes in last two decades.

Fang Gang, director of the Institute of Gender and Psychology at Beijing Forestry University, told the Global Times that the official crackdown on the sex industry in the country has been carried out in an on-and-off fashion and the latest nationwide moves were nothing new compared with previous campaigns.

"The sex industry can hardly be eliminated. Instead, it will eventually come back after a series of campaigns," he said.

Sixty years ago, when the People's Republic of China was founded, prostitution was virtually eliminated after the overwhelming central power destroyed the tacit mores and ethics by which society controlled and regulated the sex trade. However, in the last two decades, the sex industry regained its presence in large cities with an influx of migrant workers from villages and men with disposable income.

What needs to be done at the moment is to minimize the existing risks in the sex industry, which include HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Fang added.

Xiao Dong, chief of Chaoyang Chinese AIDS Volunteer Group in Beijing, told the Global Times that, "The existence of the sex industry highlights the biggest failure in China's social welfare system."

"Instead of cracking down on the sex industry, the government needs to focus on providing vocational training and equal employment opportunities to sex workers, most of whom come from poor rural areas and use their income to support their families at home," he said.

A source at the Ministry of Public Security of China in Beijing told the Global Times that he personally advocated legalization for disorganized, petty prostitution offenses, but the police still has a duty to crack down on more exploitative prostitution with its links to organized crime.
